I've had the wild idea of putting one of those cheap mechanical gauge sets in my vanagons rear valance to the side of the license plate..

I plan on putting an intercooler vent grill on the drivers side int he spring anywyas. so if I didn't like it I could eliminate the panel w/holes.. for a better more functional hole. it would allow me to know my engine heater was warming ok (winter and a Diesel van) at a glance from behind.

I could use the AMMETER inline with my glowplug circuit to know easily if all 4 are firing.. and for how long.. (I currently use a buzzer excited by the GP busbar to know the relay/plugs are getting voltage).

and would give me an extra Oil pressure gauge for when I'm idling (it's a diesel, for some reason we tend to idle them a bit).

you can get the cheapo gauges for $15.. though I'd spend the other $10 and get a copper oil pressure line.. I don't trust the little plastic ones..
