Well.... I've been to the shop where the AW molds are being "stored".
I must say, I was a little dismayed....
There are 4 mold pieces there that are allegedly part of the "deal".
3 of them are stored inside the yard, and the 4th one is outside the
fence, across the road, and under a tree and full of leaves, mud and
garbage. I know nothing about fiberglass work, so it's hard for me to
assess the condition of the parts, but they look to me like they will
probably need a bunch of TLC by someone who knows what they are
doing before they will be serviceable again.
Here's the other thing.... I was under the assumption that these
were molds for VANAGON high tops, but the owner of the glass shop
(who made the parts for AW) said that these molds are for LOAF
('68-'79) AW tops. ?? I will call Ed again on monday and ask him
which molds these are. Can anybody tell from looking at the photos
of the molds which tops they are for?
The shop owner seemed nice enough, and plenty talkative, but wasn't
interested in talking about the molds and any details of how they are
used or anything about the process. He was very interested in talking
about how much he wanted to be rid of them and will help load them
if I bring a truck or trailer....
So... now my dilemma is what to do. I bought us a little time, and the
shop owner won't do anything to get rid of them for at least a week,
so I've got a few days to decide what's next.
I don't want to be in the fiberglass business, so I have no interest in
keeping the molds for myself. I would like to see them go to someone
who can (and will) fix them up and put them back into service.
I'm willing to do the "legwork" since I'm close to the shop where they
are stored. On monday I will call a couple truck rental places and
see how much to rent a flatbed truck.
I can store the molds at my house for a while until it can be decided
what to do with them. BUT, I need to be assured that someone REALLY
wants them and will help me get them out of here when the time comes.
I will also want my out of pocket expenses (truck rental, gas) paid....
What I CAN'T afford to do is spend $100-$150 on truck rental and gas
and then have to store the molds for a year until I move and then have
to cut them up and take them to the dumps myself....
I put up a webpage with photos of the molds. Would interested parties
please take a look and help me determine if these are really worth
salvaging, and if they are for LOAF or VANAGON, and offer any ideas
on what to do with them.
I don't wanna be in the fiberglass business, and I don't want a koi pond.
But I also don't want these to go to the dumps if they are still useful
to someone and if I can get them moved without losing any money in
the process.
Looking for constructive advise....
Thanks
Steve
