I like your video (especially the "Ta-da" part) :-) I know it is
possible to do what you are showing (take the lower o-ring off of the
cylinder without taking the cylinder out), but I wonder if you are
stretching the new o-ring beyond where it is supposed to stretch in
order to put it back on. You can say, "No I have done this a ton of
times and it never causes a problem." But that is the same argument
that Bob and I are using when we say we have done the head replacements
on these engines many, many times and also had no problems caused by
leaving the old o-rings in place and just not doing anything with them.
The proper way to replace the lower o-rings is to have the cylinders
out, clean out the groove and put a new one back in over the cylinder
"skirt". If you aren't going to do it that way then you might as well
just leave it since you are also doing something naughty by stretching
it over the outside of the rusty cylinder possibly over-stretching it,
possibly nicking it all up.
As for what I put on the o-rings when I replace them, I just give them a
thin film of engine oil (10-40w).
Thanks,
Ken Wilford
