Volks, As I kicked around the country one of the things I was interested in talking with folks about was what kind of mileage they got off a set of Waterboxer Head Gaskets before they started leaking. What I found was a surprising number of people who got well over 100k miles before any leaking occurred. Several at the 200,000 mile plateau and a couple even at 300,000 miles. But many, many more people seemed to experience problems at 35-90k miles. What was done different by the longevity crowd. One thing. 1) Frequent Coolant Flushes .... every 1-2 years. Other observations 1) Many used distilled water 2) Many used other than VW Brand "phosphate free coolant" (not to suggest that VW Coolant is bad) 3) Some even measure the electrical charge of the coolant to monitor when to change it.
