No you don't as a matter of fact, when I resealed my head gaskets replaced the fuel lines painted all I coud, without digging to deep, I never moved the Distributor. At the end of all that I simply held the broken,disentigrating part in one hand and crush/clipped it with the other until the wires were free. Write down the orientation first so you don't get the wires mixed up. Then slide them in the new recpticle then snaps into place on the distributor and you are done.
