My '84 is an automatic and though I have not done this (yet) ... others have.

I would remove the shifter cover first as there are "things" inside where the indicator lights mount, etc.

The shifter handle comes off after loosening an Allen head set screw. Then there are screws at the four corners of the shifter (pull back the carpet and you'll see 'em). Of course, there are the wires that go to the indicator lights and the reverse lockout.

Removal is an easy job, and you'll like yourself better if that's your first step.
