The vanagon AFM is easy to clean. Just pop the black cover off of it. Inside you will see the PC track and the swing arm. Good quality contact cleaner does the job. The look for wear grooves in the track. I had one that would idle until it got warm and then die at stops. There was a wear spot right at that location on the track. You can carefully loosen screws and shift it very slightly. Much more than very slightly and you can cause other problems. Replace cover and use a good gasket sealer. On my own vangon when it was air cooled the PO had probably had maint done that had the cover off and never resealed. The track on the AFM was a total loss from the arm swinging through fine dust all the time.
