They may be a good way to pay for stuff, but they now stink if you want to get paid. They are easy to forge, and even easier to "oops I lost it before I mailed it, I need to cancel it".

You loose the face value, whatever you sent, and get to pay all the bank fees for depositing a bad check.

We stopped taking them at my shop. When every new checking account now has a Visa or Mastercard number attached to it, there is not a lot of reason (aside from scamming) to use paper to transfer money.
