Subject: Fuel leaks fixed - EZ job
Comments: To: pecook@cox.net

Just a report.

I fixed the fuel leaks around the gas tank and by the engine.

My fuel tank would leak about a glass-full of fuel after fill up (Got light?) which would scare the crap out of other folks :-). I pulled the fuel tank and replaced all the rubber grommets and vent lines with new pieces. Mine were dry-rotted and split in many areas. I applied a good amount of vaseline to the fuel filler grommet to "rejuvenate it", as prescribed by some Vaseline enthusiasts on the list.

I also had a fuel line leak just in front of the engine, at the firewall, which caused fuel to drip onto the exhaust (yikes!). I purchased a fuel line repair kit for a F*RD at the local FLAPS, which came with similarly-sized plastic fuel line and metal line connectors. I trimmed back the plastic VW fuel line, used the appropriate length of F*RD line and the connectors. I had to use a hair dryer to soften the lines so that the connectors would press-fit inside - as lines cool they shrink and stiffen. One connector fit inside the rubber line at the engine end which I tightened with a small hose clamp. I tested the fit and am satisfied with its ability to hold under pressure - it is VERY tight.

The whole job was easy, unlike the exhaust nuts.
