Depends on the head lights.  But good grounds is always the foundation.
Relays would come in if you are using higher current lamps that you donΉt
want the heavy current going through your switches.  VW realized that in the
later vanagons when they upgraded the current rating of the light switch but
a better option would have been to relay it.
