From some discussions with a local pub editor a few years back, I have to
wonder if it had more to do with commercial obligations. She told me that
many a mag has published extra editions after technically being out of
business. The reason was the cost of doing those extra "very bad" issues,
vs the cost of trying to repay for advanced advertisers or contracted
columns or contracted external personnel.
She showed me the notes on a local mag that her company formerly handled.
Not real numbers but....
If ended on date ... Major bankrupty with no hope of ever resurfacing
If laid off almost everybody and run for one more issue would reduce
commercial obligations to very low but still probable bankrupt
If lay off everybody except the principals and run for two more issues,
would use up almost all already paid for articles and contracts. Would owe
extremely small amount on commercial. They contacted several commercial
supporters whose contracts were expiring about really cheap final edition
ads and most supported. Final result was that the publication was able to
close out rather messy and soiled but had a solid backer base that would
probably back a resurfaced mag in a slightly different format. That is if
commercial backers could be found to resurface it. But the point on this
method was that they really left very little hanging and there is a chance
of resurfacing.
I am betting the VW Trends publisher is minimizing losses by sending out one
more issue.
Then the question is...is the name VW Trends valuable enough that someone
else may pick it up?
