Larry, When I first got my 88 GL I had a cooling problem. My mechanic was checking the rig over forme, had the engine idling after a quick run around the block, when the cooling system literally blew the expansion tank level sensor completely out of the tank!! We were all surprised! That indicated at first that the pressure cap was faulty, and wouldn't open to bleed expanded coolant over to the over flow tank. I had a new cap on hand, so it wa sinstalled, and the coolant level sensor was re-installed. Warmed up the engine and bang, the sensor blew out again. Upon checking, it was obvious that the threads on the sensor and tank were not good, so I ordered a new tank and sensor. New tank and sensor installed, new pressure cap installed, warmed the engine, and BANG! coolant sensor was again blown out of the expansion tank. Really puzzled now, I got a new thermostat for the system, mechanic installed and rand the engine. No more problems. Been good ever sense, and all that happened 60,000 miles back.
