I have used Pioneer detachable face decks in my last two Vanagons (and in a corolla and a 4Runner.)

I like them because the unit size is much smaller than most, and fits in the dash perfectly. There's nothing sticking out and no modifications need be done. The ones I have used are powerful enough alone, so I've never had the need for an external amplifier. I'm not rattling any windows, but it sounds good enough for me.
