Subject: 86 Overheat & Emissions
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

I've checked the archives and can't seem to find a match for this one. My '86 2.1l began to overheat the over night on the way home from work. It's a hilly drive at a good altitude (7k). It didn't max out the temp guage, nor did the LED start to flash. Once I turned it off in the driveway I ot a pretty impressive steam show, granted the outside air temp was about 20. In the daylight I've checked the oil and coolant levels. While prepared to see sludge on the dipstick it was normal oil. The coolant fill bottle is full, and there are no ovious leaks or broken hoses. When I start it there's no problem, exceptthe coolant LED keeps flashing. I haven't let it idle more than 10 minutes and in that time there is no movement of the temp needle. I'm confused... In addition I'm trying to get this thing through emissions. The first failure was at idle, and the recommendation was to change ignition components. I changed plugs, wires, cap and rotor and low and behold it passed at low idle, but failed at high idle (opposite of the first test). Has anyone had a similar experience and cured it?

Tomas
