If you have sold the vehicle out of state, then how did your (obviously California resident) friends part it out in California? So it never leaves the state? Well that's not exactly kosher either.

But them if they are parting out vans and cars without a wrecking yard permit, then they are not exactly sticklers for "details" anyway. What happens to the carcass? A legitimate wrecking yard will ask for a junking slip if the carcass does have enough of value other than the sheet metal body.

There is a right and proper way to do things. My point is the van in question is not as great a deal as it first appears. It will is cost to someone to part out a car in addition to their labor and initial cost of the van. Anyone thinking of doing this should consider all those factors before jumping into such an endeavour.
