Many years ago I moved from Estes Park Colorado to Apache Junction Az to stay with my retired folks for a bit- my mother raved about the desert scenery, how beautiful it was in the spring, etc etc etc. Just coming from being surrounded by mountains, I couldn't see the beauty. I was used to the scenery jumping up and grabbing me. I later spent 7 years in the desert in southern California- Desert Hot Springs, Joshua Tree areas- and finally began to see what she was talking about. The desert has it's own beauty, you just have to look a little more closely to see it. Now I live in Northern Michigan where there are forests and lakes galore, and I know some people who are used to more open spaces can't stand to be up here. Good thing we don't all like the same thing or it would be awfully crowded!
