If you have a 1.9, you should remove the cross coolant pipe (water pump housing to passenger side head) in order to get proper access. Drain the cooling system first because it's gonna spew coolant everywhere.

You get even better access if you remove the oil filler pipe too, but then you have to drain the oil as well.

The REAL BAD NEWS is the nuts/studs that hold the alternator bracket to the engine don't usually loosen. They break off. If so, you are in for a real, real fun time. Check the archives back a week or two for discussions on stud replacement options. Hopefully you have access to a 90 degree drill....
