We have checked everything List members suggested and much more and the problem remains. An update on the symptoms: This AM I drove at about 68mph until the engine was thoroughly warmed up (10 minutes). At that point, the engine began balking as if it was fuel starved. I could maintain a speed of 60mph but nothing higher or the hesitation returned. This hesitation eventually occurred in all 4 gears although, for about 20 minutes, I could drive at 4000RPMs in lower gears. Eventually, all gears balked at about 4,000 RPMs or lower.

Yesterday, I thought the problem was fixed when, after returning to the van from an hour of library research, it ran above 4000 RPMs with no problem. However, when the engine warmed up, the problems returned.

Today, I thouroughly clearned the ECU plug (both ends, the plug and the ECU end)but this made no difference.

No, the mechanic is not a Vanagon specialist. He's a competent foreign car specialist who sees Vanagons only occasionally--in recent years.

I'm heading west to Arizona and hope I can at least drive at 60mph. I will check for further respones in another library along the way.

Thanks to all who took the time to make suggestions. With your help, I will solve this problem.
