There's a lot of conjecture out there on Larry's problem, but here's what I
am very sure is what has happened. Not sure of Larry mentioned the one head
nut that was found only finger-tight. This was either not tightened properly
on assembly, or the stud is pulling threads from the engine case. In any
event, the problem I'm sure will be found to be combustion leaking past the
cylinder sealing ring[s] where they meet the head. This leakage will rear
it's ugly head normally when the engine is up to full operating temperature
and under load such as highway speed. This is inexcusable for an engine
builder with AVP's supposed good reputation. However, I have an AVP reman
engine I pulled from a Westy Syncro last year with only 10K on the rebuild
with this exact problem. We'll see in a few days if the retightening of the
head bolts holds, or whether this becomes a warranty job for AVP.
