I grew up in the Mississippi delta, drove air-cooled vw's and never had air-conditioning. You really have to watch an air-cooled engine on those hot and humid days. Sweating constantly was expected and the real problem wasn't the heat but was the mosquitoes that would come in at the stop signs and then bite your sandal clad feet while you tried to drive. I learned to not aim the flip-out windows (crotch coolers) at my face after getting hit by several large and unidentified bugs and to open the doors at highway speeds to flush out the foot-well mosquitoes. I guess my point is that you don't need ac. I still drive an air-cooled vw without ac (or good heat for that matter) and don't really notice until it comes up on the list.
