I used to put a VERY LIGHT coating of Grey RTV Silicon Sealant for Aluminium surfaces on them just so it would stay in place until I got the cooler back in place. That's before VW started supplying the new style O-rings with the small locator holes which keeps the O-ring in place. A light coat of engine oil on it would be good but not necessary.
