I don't agree at all. The only rims that will sit in the same "middle"
as the original rims are rims with the exact same ET. Rim width has
nothing to do with it. Syncros can run 7" rims at ET39 just fine. The
tire is what will rub if too wide or tall. The points of contact are not
near the rim so there is no linear correspondence to rim width and
interference. Tire height, width, and profile will be the determining
factors, not rim width. 2wd fitment is more critical, at least up front.
VW did not make the 14x6 alloys with a different ET than the 14x5.5
steels to keep the rims from rubbing. They did it to keep the wider
tires from rubbing. The 185 width tire that came on the steels was fine
at ET39 but the 205 width tire fitted to the alloys was not. The rims
that came with 205 needed to be set out some from the body. The amount
needed was 1/2 the amount of TIRE width increase. Syncros did not need
the alloys to have ET30 but the much more numerous 2wd did so VW put
them on the Syncro too to save the cost of producing different wheels.
