ive installed power mirrors on vans before, you just use a large SS
sheetmetal screw and drill the 3rd hole and screw the screw in. your done.

as far as the mirror glass, yes you can remove it easily. its held in by
tabs..i think the mirror glass removal is actually explained in the Bentley.
 what your glass is doing is de-silvering around the edge.  ive seen alot
like that..happens to all older mirror glass whwen water gets between the
silvering and glass..  no way to "fix' it, you need to replace the glass or use one
of those "mirror glass overlays" that is available at your FLAPS.  ive used the
mirror glass overlays before, thats your cheapest and easiest fix to the
de-silvering problem. they just peel and stick on.
