Common? I'd say no. Sounds like your window regulator broke. Door handle is held on with 4 screws. Two are hidden under plastic tabs. Pry the tabs up with a thin knife and you should be able to remove the handle. If you mean the window crank, that's held on with a single screw. Lift the plastic up and you'll gain access to the screw.

I recently replaced with (power) window regulator on my Westy. It wasn't that bad a job.
