The short circuit is definitely from the circuit that goes from the clutch to the instrument panel at what seems to be the odometer. When I unplug it no problem. I checked behind the ignition switch and all is OK. At the clutch end both wires are red but through the black sleeve at the other end wires are brown and another color that I forget now. What a mystery.

Is it possible that something in the instrument panel is causing the problem?

Look at the wiring harness right above the pedals where it comes out of the column. Betting on a worn wire or a couple melted together.
