The problem is that everything else is costing much much more... health care, houses, cars, etc. There is little room in most working people's budget for rising transportation costs. But that's not the REAL problem.

The real problem is not that gas costs what it did in 1950. The real problem is that gas may be at $80 a barrel this summer, and that the rest of the world is going to look at us and our ridiculous energy dependence and start trading oil in euros instead of dollars. Maybe not this year, but someday.

When that happens, the price of gas will be the last thing on the minds of us all. Saying that gas cost less than is did in so-and-so year is feel-good stuff. The problems that our competition for energy with emerging economies like China and India will create portends nothing good for this country. Sure, they're buying the same high-priced oil that we are, but they are using it to fuel an exploding economy. We are using it to get our Whummers and WSUVs up and down the road. They're leveraging it, we're pouring it down the drain.
