That's why I quit using my Vanagon as a daily driver. I went from 17 mpg to 40 mpg in the city when I bought my New Beetle TDI - NO BATTERIES REQUIRED. I get very high 40's on the highway.

Yes, fuel costs the same, in adjusted dollars, now as it did in 1950, but in 1950 you could support a family on a single income and you WALKED to the corner store to buy groceries before you MADE dinner. Children WALKED or RODE THE BIKE to school. You PATCHED torn clothes or socks (!) and FIXED your shoes. You did NOT own several TVs, A Mocrowave oven plus a convection oven plus a regular oven, a VCR, DVD player, computer, X-box, surround sound system, have clothes closets the size of bed rooms. We buy 3 cars and whine about the demise of public transportation. Who's to blame? WE are.
