Hi Jere,

Did you read Ken's reply and suggestions? I used to do air-cooled engines in the late 70's and his method was widely used by anyone racing or that wanted to make sure they had an excellent seal between the cylinder and head.

Did the broken oil ring cause any cylinder and/or piston damage (scarring)?

Tim

Hi Jim,

I have 2 the new o-ring (uppers: green ones) might as well replace both (2 bucks a piece.) And yes I was just going to try it again. I did not use the Vaseline. I looked at the o-ring that I had put in and I has a nick in it.

The oil ring is a different problem; I must have broken it when I installed the cylinders

Jere

Jere,

As you know I recently went through this, without the out-of-place gasket problem you encountered.

More detail please? If I understand what you're saying, get another o-ring and go at it again. I was advised to coat the o-ring with vaseline and I had already spent an evening polishing the inside of the head that captures the o-ring with a dremel tool and wire brush. If you didn't do both of these things, you could have snagged the ring on some crud.

If I'm misunderstanding what happened to you, give some more detail.

Later,

Jim
