rust converter coating such as "extend" "rust mort" or "rustoleums rusty metal converter" do actually work. sometimes when i get a vehicle and dont have time to do the rust repair immediately, i sand down the rust spots with a wad of sandpaper, and then paint this stuff on with a small brush or q-tip. its still holding up a year later. i have a trailer here i used "extend" on, it was totally rusted, and i painted a large area of it with extend, and its still holding up.. makes the metal turn black, and retards rust. it NEEDS to be topcoated, but it will hold up without a topcoat for a while.
