Stan, Since when does bad luck or a bad purchase constitute a law? I have experienced none of the atrocities you describe and I put 70,000 miles on my '85 Westy in 4 years which included many 14-hour trips while cruising 75 mph, plus I used it as my daily driver. Vanagons are much like any other aged vehicle you can buy - some are neglected, some are not. We have to remember that all we hear on the list are calls for help with repairs and problems which makes our view of Vanagons rather one-sided.
