In the manual for my 1991 Westy, there is a discussion of Octane
Rating and in bold, is printed "Do not use any fuel with octane
ratings lower than 91 RON or 87 AKI"
The manual explains that: "The 91 RON octane rating which you will
find above the filler neck is based on the research method. The AKI
octane ratings usually displayed on USA gasoline pumps is calculated
as follows: Research octane number plus motor octane number, divided
by 2."
There is a discussion of Gasolines containing alcohol and the manual
states " We recommend you use quality gasoline that is NOT blended
with alcohol. The use of fuel containing alcohol can cause loss of
fuel economy and driveability and performance problems."
As Jim stated, the manual discusses fuel additives that manufacturers
put in their gasoline for keeping fuel injectors clean and for
reducing carbon deposit build-up on intake valves. The manual goes on
to state "To assure the long term performance of your car's engine,
you should use gasoline brands that include these deposit control
additives."
I use regular grade gasoline and once a year, add a can of fuel
injector cleaner to a full tank of gasoline.

The octane wanted is standard old base fuel. The only specification that VW
put on it is that it should be a detergent injector cleaning fuel.

Planned insanity is best.
Remember that sanity is optional.
