Leon, the 86+ models with AC had a factory recall to fix the AC mountings before that problem occurred. Many owners did not bother to get the recall fix done. It is a crappy system but the crumbling disaster could have been avoided if the recall was done. The recall was 10 years ago. I would keep the rear AC if I were you. You can do away with the full duct work and still keep that rear unit. It will blow like a hurricane with the rest of the duct removed. I hope you don't wear a toupee.
