I've been reseting the trip meter on my '84, for the 14 years I've owned
it, without regard to whether it's moving or not.
I understood that the warning not to reset while moving was because it
could cause the odometer gear to become loose on the shaft ... not
because the reset button could be broken. But, as I said, I reset mine
more than half the time while moving and have had no problems with it.
As to the ignition switch being broken by having too many keys ... I too
can't see how that could happen as extra weight on the key ring would
put no pressure on the electrical part.
Maybe we're just living on borrowed time
