Actual Facts:
Hans Ledwinka was the first to come up with the 4 cylinder air cooled boxer
type engine in 1926, for the Tatra T30. You're thinking of the T11, a small
"people's car" with a TWO cylinder aircooled engine, which was likely an
inspiration for Dr Porsche in designing the original Type 1 "Volkswagen".

If you think the T11 <http://www.tatraportal.sk/popisky/t11/t11_07.jpg> (or
any Tatra car) looks like a Type 1, you're nuts.
If you think the 4-cyl aircooled boxer Ledwinka designed for the T30
<http://www.tatraportal.sk/popisky/t30/t30_09.jpg> looks anything like the
aircooled Type-1  engine (other than the basic layout), you're DOUBLE-nuts.

If you think the wasserboxer is just a Type-1 aircooled with a water jacket
instead of cooling fins, you're TRIPLE-nuts.
You ARE aware of the VW 411, yes?

The basic design of the wasserboxer was 20 years old in '91, not "stone
age". It was due for retirement, but it certainly wasn't a holdover from 1923.
