If they were interchangeable I'd only sell one of them. Why would I stock two different parts when one would do both jobs? A Vanagon is wider than a bus; hence the axle shaft must be longer in order to reach from the transaxle to the wheel. This is why the axle shaft is different even though the CV joint is the same. Also the shaft differs for an auto trans model versus a manual trans one.
