I spotted these self-proclaimed 'traction aids' on sale at my local NAPA for $15/set includes semi-canvas storage bag. http://www.mainemade.com/members/profile.asp?ID=1189 seems like a decent enough price and would have likely gotten my 87 syncro unstuck when I was driving thru my back yard in 24" settled sugar snow (wasn't any snow traction) and a rear wheel sank into soft mud (was over my septic leech field)

I'm planning on picking up a set, worse case is I resell them @ a swap meet for $10 err $20 later on..

they hook into the tire treads with small non sharp bent ends, then are drawn in or 'ramped' onto length is about 18-24" long well made steel with sharp points on the 'turf side'
