I stripped a set of aluminum bicycle cranks (went from a blah grey paint to the natural aluminum finish). To keep them from oxidizing, i just used a can of Varathane, which as far as i can tell is a sort of spray on plastic. Still there 10 years later (except for the part your shoe rubs...).
