Those symptoms on mine led me to the clutch slave cylinder, and after I changed it out, all was well.

A quick look at the slave and it was obvious that it was leaking and ready to fail, even tho there was no sign of it on the garage floor. As far as changing them out, its not hard, but it taxes the mind to figure out how to get at them :-) The master cylinder is reputed to be fairly easy to remove. Mine went out before I knew much about vanagons, so I had my mechanic do it. The slave was really quite easy.
