I've used Redline for over 10 years on various VWs with good success. My '88 4 speed Westy took 3 qts when drained with vehicle level. My '82 Diesel 4 speed took 4 qts when I drained with the front of van about 12" higher than rear. If you really want to get the old stuff out, raise the van, and buy 4 qts to be safe. You will need the 17mm hex/allen socket to remove the filler and drain plugs. Loosen the filler *first* to be sure you *can*, before you dump the oil... My '88 was very tight the first time I did it. I use a long funnel with a piece of tubing on the end, and fill from either the pass side wheel well, or the engine compartment, after snaking the tubing into the filler. Rig something up to hang the funnel, and expect a slow fill process - I just pour it in slowly until I can stick the whole bottle in the funnel, then go do something for 5 minutes while it drains down. A hand pump would be even better if you have one. As for draining the trans, I usually leave it overnight, and start draining with the trans hot, so most of the crud is still suspended and comes out with the oil.
