The 16 valve motors: Horsepower (SAE net)...........................134 @ 5800 rpm Maximum Torque (ft-lb).........................133 @ 4400 rpm vs the TIICO: 132 ft/lb. torque @ 3500 rpm The HP on the "old" TIICO (you can now get 140 hp) is 118 & 4800 rpm. I suspect that the torque and hp coming on so much higher is the fly in the ointment for the 16 V in the vanagon. Gotta keep the revs up to use the power, and that isn't always ideal considering where some of us take these things. My "bet" is that the auto trannies last longer with these conversions than the manuals.
