Well it's probably because the replacement parts are junk, unlike Vanagons.

I replaced the slave, and the master went out.

The master was new. My replacement this time was used, from an '89, with a nice bright metal housing. The old "new" one lasted two years and had the VW logos ground off and was smaller.
