<font size=3>The term "reinforced" often means that the tire
itself, without the reinforcement, would not be strong enough for use by
loaded Vanagons or other heavy vehicles. <br><br>
In other words, "reinforced" means that the tire has had
something added to its design to bring it up in specifications.
<br><br>
The term is typically absent from terminology applied to other tires that
may be suitable for Vanagon and Vanagon Syncro because they don't need
any reinforcement because they are plenty strong enough as they are. For
example, most light truck tires are not "reinforced" because
they are already strong enough that they don't need any reinforcement.
<br><br>
Accordingly, in general, you don't now-a-days need to look for a
reinforced tire, merely a tire that meetings the load recommendations,
which I think is around 1550lbs(BFG-AT) or 1600lbs(all others). There is
a lot of material on tire specifications in the article at
<a href="http://users.rcn.com/derekdrew/vanagon/All_About_16-Wheels_And_The_CV_900.htm" eudora="autourl">http://users.rcn.com/derekdrew/vanagon/All_About_16-Wheels_And_The_CV_900.htm</a>
toward the bottom. <br><br>
Another term to look for is whether a tire has "extra plys" in the sidewall. Extra plys will give a tire more resistance to squishyness, and so reduce the tendency of the Vanagon to make some passengers carsick. In order to impart a plush ride, Vanagons in North America were normally issued with very squishy tires, and I know of at least one owner who actually sold the vehicle because the occupants were getting carsick, without realizing that he could have changed the tires instead. <br><br>
So, a very dim view of the term "reinforced sidewall" might be this: "This tire sucked when we started out so we worked on it."<br><br>

Question:<br>
<br>
How does one determine whether a tire has a "Reinforced Sideway" or not.<br>
<br>
I've collected several definitions ... anxious to know yours.<br>

</a>SYNCRO OWNERS WHO DRIVE OFF THE ROAD:<br>
You only get to change your ring and pinions once every 10 years <br>
because that's how long the average syncro transmission goes before <br>
its next rebuild. If you want bigger tires and more ground clearance<br>
start planning your higher number ring and pinion sets right now so you <br>
can take advantage of your next trans rebuild. <br>
