Subject:   Volvo seats in a Vanagon??
Content-Type:   text/plain; charset="US-ASCII"

Has anyone upgraded Vanagon or even better Westfalia front seats to seats from another model vehicle. I found a late 70s Volvo in a wrecking yard and was reminded how great those front seats are. They have great support and the firmness and especially great lower back support (I think this is lumbar support?) There is a knob on the seat to adjust the firmess of the lumbar support on the Volvo seats.

While the seat rack on the Volvo is easily removed and could be "easily" adapted to a vanagon cockpit, I'm still not sure how the seat cushion height would compair to stock VW seats. From the looks of it the seat cushion would be too high to be practical in Vanagon. Also the Volvo seat back is pretty thick compaired to a Vanagon seat which most likely would cause trouble when up against the sink/stove cabinet --which could restrict the adjustment of the seat back and forth from the steering wheel/pedals, and this might also limit the ability to adjust the back seat cushion angle.

I have the early 80s style Westfalia seats with the striped fabric upholstry. These seats have no low back support and sparse padding. I know the GL velour vanagon seats are an easy upgrade, but they don't appear to have all that much lower back support either. The lower back support would be nice on those long trips--and even the short ones.

So in addition to the Volvo questions Or has anyone had luck upgrading the seats with seats from another vehicle?

Thanks, Jeff 83.5 Westfalia LA,CA
