Uhh ... if you're going to all this trouble, why not make the move to a Subaru engine? I did so in 1997 when the dreaded coolant leak started. Installed a 2.2 Subaru and it transformed the vehicle. Eventually sold it to a guy in Texas.

Since that time an entire industry has sprung up - from different kits to people who will install the engine for you. Yes, it's worth the effort. Alas, too late I realized how stupid I was to sell my '86 Country Homes Subie conversion so now I'm in the process of building another one: 2.2 Subie into a 1984 Westy.
