Subject: ICU saga...they're not all the same.

Last week after replacing a fuel line my van wouldn't start. Fuel was fine, but no spark. This is an 84 Westy with a tiico install. The tiico reuses the ICU from the digijet. My troubleshooting led me to believe that the ICU was the problem. In the archives, it is mentioned that this part, 211 905 351D, is superceded by 191 905 351B.

So, I bought that part, aftermarket, but made in Germany. Got home and the van would start, but it ran incredibly rough, not really idling, just sputtering along. This was the same thing it did when I tested a junkyard ICU I picked up as a spare, so on a hunch, I went junkyard hunting (Where do all the Volkswagens in Tucson go when they die? Not to the junkyard) and eventually found one that was 211 905 351A.

Got home, swapped it in, and now the van runs great. So, the moral of the story is, at least as the tiico is concerned, all ICU's are not the same. Interestingly, the bus depot lists both of these part numbers (191... and 211.) as the digijet ICU. Does anybody know the difference?

Anybody want to buy a like new ICU, 191 905 351B, for $40?

Cheers, Jeff
