I was taught to do it dry and wet. Doing it dry meant on an engine that
the oil had drained back into the pan for a long time. ie cold.
After the dry test you would squirt some oil into the cylinder and
check it again. Any differences could be chalked up to ring sealing. No
or insignificant change on a low cylinder meant valves.
