I don't recall about the washers, but I did have an '68 bus once that had a CV come loose while I was going down the road. It really ticked me opf because there had been previous work done by a hired mechanic. I didn't pay to have bolts come loose going down the road, especially where I was in the middle of nowhere.

After getting home, I pullde the bolts, drilled a hole in each bold across the head, re-installed them, the applied an aircraft safety wire trick to them. Those puppies could not loosen if they worked at it. The safety wire prevented the from backing off.

I don't think you can do that with the Vanagons, because the outboard CV is burried deep in that box. But I f I could get at them, I would do it that way again. Safety tie with safety wire - only way to fly!!!
