Luckily for John, Whitehorse isn't on his itinerary, though Rapid City, SD is.

John,

My vote is "go for it".

Remember that you'll have to divide the kids up in front and back seats on occasion.

Show the kids Yellowstone (if it's not tourist season yet), Badlands, and Mount Rushmore. Eat at Bobak's in Chicago. Visit Niagara Falls and walk around Toronto. Your kids will get a priceless geography lesson.

My son still remembers our 'round the west trip from '86 when he was 5.
