Jere,

As the engine gets hotter, the oil gets thinner, and consequently slides through all the tiny spaces too easily - especially since, as the engine gets older, the spaces tend to get less tiny.

More viscous oil is harder to push, kinda like squeezing honey through the small orifice in the top of the bottle.
