But Rapid City, SD, is a good place to stop if he's worried about breaking down, good VW repairs available there! Rocky, at European Motor Works (I think that's what they're called - see Larry's website).

Just past Rapid City, stay in the free "primitive" campground in the Badlands, it's lovely! And driving on 90 heading east from the Badlands, look on your left for the amazing life-sized (or bigger?) iron sculpture of a man leading a dinosaur skeleton on a leash. (See http://users.rcn.com/oldcat/Dinosaur2.gif.)
